Advising Fellows

Advising fellows ("AFs") are undergraduates studying Symbolic Systems who provide peer advising and program support for undergraduates. The AF office is 460-040A.

If you are Stanford undergraduate either interested or majoring/minoring in Symbolic Systems, you can contact the advising fellows and program administrators at the email address "symsys-afs at lists dot stanford dot edu". If you are interested in applying for the master's program, write to "symsys-admissions at lists dot stanford dot edu".

Name Class Year Concentration
+ Jimmy Chen 2010 HCI

About me: I'm a senior from Overland Park, Kansas and an Advising Fellow for the 2009-2010 school year. My interests are in software development and HCI, and I've worked for several big tech companies like Facebook and Yahoo. I've also done a lot of things unrelated to software, like biology research, a Sophomore College course about ecology, human-robot interaction research, psychology research, an Alternative Spring Break trip about energy policy, and (soon) a quarter in Washington DC. In my free time, I play on the Stanford Men's Ultimate Team.

I'd love to chat with you about research, HCI, or Symbolic Systems in general.
Office hours: W 2:15-4:15 pm, F 1-3pm in 460-040A

+ Zavain Dar 2010 Applied Logic

About me: I'm a senior in symsys concentrating in applied logic. Come talk to me about logic, computer science, math, entrepreneurship, sports, food, philosophy, life, or anything symbolic systems related.

Office hours: Tuesday and Thursday: 11am-1pm (460-060A)

+ Nathaniel Hillard 2010 Natural Language

About me: I'm a senior from Cincinnati Ohio concentrating in natural language, and double majoring in symsys and Chinese. In a word, I am interested in translating between computers and people: How do we put the vast intricacies of human language into a format that a machine can read and process? More centrally, how can we represent ideas in a way that can bring out their essence? This summer, I worked with Dan Flickinger at CSLI attempting to teach a machine to process the syntax of Chinese. In my spare time, I kickbox, host a radio show, and fix computers. I am an RCC in Roble this year as well.
Office hours: Tuesday 12:10 - 1:10, 2:10-3:10 Thursday 1:00-3:00 in 460-040A

+ Christopher Lin 2009 HCI

About me: New Advising Fellow beginning Winter 2010.
Office hours: Office hours will begin Winter 2010.

+ Mike Mellenthin 2010 Artificial Intelligence

About me: I am a Junior doing a concentration in Artificial Intelligence. Last summer, I did research on spoken dialog control systems for robots at Stanford's Computation Semantics Laboratory (Semlab). I also backpacked around China.

When I'm not thinking about school I play with yoyos.
Office hours: No office hours - Overseas Spring Quarter

+ Clayton Mellina 2011 Undecided

About me: New Advising Fellow beginning Winter 2010.
Office hours: Office hours will begin in Winter 2010.

+ Conal Sathi 2010 Neurosciences

About me: I'm a senior from Denver, CO and an Advising Fellow for the 2009-2010 school year. I'm very interested in Neuroscience and Artificial Intelligence, especially in the overlap of the two, as they each give an interesting perspective on the other. I've done some research with Spoken Dialogue Systems and Machine Translation. I've also worked at a startup (Baynote), where I've worked on algorithms for recommendations. In addition to these academic interests, I'm an avid fan of music. I'm in Raagapella and you'll often find me jamming with others.

If you ever have any questions about AI, Neuroscience, or just Symbolic Systems in general, come over to my office hours and we can chat.
Office hours: Monday 11am-12pm, Tuesday 3:45-4:45 pm, and Wednesday 4:15-6:15 pm (460-060A)
