    Job Description:

This job is a great blend of computer science (including artificial intelligence), data analysis, and other areas. We've had great success with SymSys majors in the past, and would love to get some more.

Support Engineer, Multiple Products - Mountain View

This position is based in Mountain View, CA.

    The area: Operations and IT

In little more than a decade, Google created one of the world's largest global computing infrastructures for both internal and external use. We built it – and will continue to develop and support it – with the world's most talented administrators. Chances are that we exceed every example of a "large installation" you've encountered in your career as a network, systems or security professional. Using our unique technologies along with open source tools, we keep Google's customer-facing products running, robust and secure. Our objective is to create solutions that allow people to work and communicate in new and innovative ways – giving back to the world's technical community whenever we can.

The role: Support Engineer, Multiple Products

As a Support Engineer, you will investigate the abuse of Google products, identify new forms of abuse, and develop and improve our systems to protect Google's products. You will be working on solving big problems with elegant solutions while working with large data sets. If you love solving complex problems in a fast paced environment, this is a great role for you. We get to work with many different product teams and deploy solutions to protect Google and its users from abuse.

    Responsibilities:
Analyze data and synthesize into conclusions for product groups.
Interact with other Google teams and Google customers.
Provide technical support for internal and external clients.
Increase efficiency through processes and system enhancements.
    Requirements:
BA/BS or above in Computer Science, or related field.
Strong knowledge of SQL and database structures.
    Experience working in Unix/Linux environments.
Experience in numerical analysis, algorithms and data-mining.
Solid understanding of core webmaster skills.
Strong programming ability in one or more of the following languages: Java, Perl, Python, PHP, or JavaScript.
Strong ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and effectively. Native fluency in multiple languages a plus.

  • SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY WITH STARTUP INCUBATED AT NEA

    Posted on Jun 29, 2009.
Last updated on Jun 29, 2009.

    Job Description:

Quantios helps guide students through one of the most important decisions of
their young adult lives. We develop decision support tools for the 4.2
million teenagers that leave home for university each year, and the
professionals that help them with their college choices. Our flagship
    product is AcceptEdge (www.acceptedge.com <http://www.acceptedge.com/> );
we're also developing tools for colleges to identify talent that matches
their needs, and software for high schools to help them advise their
    students.

We're looking for engineering interns to help us build out acceptedge.com
    <http://acceptedge.com/> <http://acceptedge.com/> this summer. You'll be
working on immediately important contributions in direct collaboration with
the founders, and have the opportunity to gain insight into the operations
of the company as we work to build partnerships and bring AcceptEdge to
market this summer. We've raised a small round of angel financing already,
and are working from incubator space at New Enterprise Associates
    (www.nea.com <http://www.nea.com/> ) on Sand Hill Road.

In terms of coding, lots of experience with HTML and CSS should be a given.
Specifically, we're looking for experience with (in order of importance):
    - PHP,
    - Python, and,
    - MySQL.

95% of our core code is PHP 5, but the back-end math and other heavy lifting
is in Python. We use MySQL for persistent storage, and memcached on top of
that. We're looking for motivated, self-starting engineers who can think
for themselves and work independently without supervision on parts of a
complex whole. You don't have to be one of the best in the world (yet) as
long as you're willing to learn.

The college admission process is highly stressful and incredibly
inefficient. We're working to turn it into a science, and improve outcomes
for both students and universities. There's a lot that can be done when
data enters education, and we're just getting started.

  • Right Media on campus April 11th-13th for Spring Career Fair

    Posted on Apr 3, 2007.
Last updated on Apr 3, 2007.

    Job Description:

Not sure how to use your SymSys degree after graduation?

Come chat with us about Right Media.

Why might you want to work for us?
    * Interdisciplinary mindset... Ad-hoc cross-functional groups form every day to solve business or technical problems.
    * Innovative technology... We do really cool sh*t. Our platform hosts a live auction between 60000 participants ~50000 times per second. Even with that kind of data, we're able to provide hourly reporting on 2-3 billion transactions each day.
    * Startup mentality... Although we've grown to 200 people and 5 satellite offices, we still very much have a startup mentality, with small business groups forming regularly to tackle new market issues and an extremely welcoming, collaborative atmosphere.
    * Meritocracy... Individuals that thrive are quickly rewarded with more responsibility and larger projects
    * Financial stability and likelihood of success... Having strong industry partnerships and being recognized as one of the most innovative, forward-thinking companies in the market, we're no longer questioning whether of not we'll be successful, rather _how_ successful we'll be.

A dynamic, New York City based company in the online media industry, we spend every day using SymSys-related design and problem solving skills to build technology solutions for the first open market exchange of interactive advertising where publishers and advertisers can buy and sell digital media. A few months ago, Yahoo led our most recent round of funding to earn a 20% stake in the business.

Don't worry if you have no experience in the industry- a lot of us didn't when we started, either.

Visiting from Manhattan, (all Stanford alums:) two Product Managers (one History Masters and one SymSys/ Neuroscience Undergrad), a Solutions Analyst (SymSys/ Decision Making and Rationality), and a Software Developer (Math Undergrad + PhD elsewhere) will be out at Stanford for a few days, and we'd love to talk to SymSys students about what they can do for us with their tezzie degree. We have many open positions that would be a great fit for SymSys grads.

If you'd like to meet up for an interview during the week of the Spring Career Fair, send Ashish an email: anaik at rightmedia dot com. We’ll only be at the first day of the career fair- Thursday, the 12th- so definitely get in touch with him if you can’t make it that day but would like to meet us on Wednesday or Friday.

The job postings below are only a sampling of our current hiring needs. If your interests/background don’t necessarily fit what you see below, still get in touch. We are growing by leaps & bounds, and can probably find a spot in our company for any intelligent, entrepreneurial, and hard working individual. Thank you for taking the time to read this... If you have any questions, shoot me an email (edavis at rightmedia dot com). We look forward to hearing from you!

  • RightMedia interviewing at CoHo this Wednesday morning

    Posted on Dec 3, 2006.
Last updated on Dec 3, 2006.

    Job Description:

Thinking about a job or internship?

A few weeks ago, Yahoo led our most recent round of funding to earn a 20% stake in the business.

Don't worry if you have no experience in the industry- a lot of us didn't when we started, either.

Visiting from Manhattan, our CTO, Brian O'Kelley, and I will be out at Stanford for a few days, and we'd love to talk to SymSys students about what they can do for us with their tezzie degree. We have many open positions that would be a great fit for SymSys grads or interns.

If you'd like to meet up for a casual interview, send me an email: edavis at rightmedia dot com. We're thinking Wednesday morning at the CoHo would be easiest for students. Coffee on us! Plus, maybe, a job.

The Company: Right Media is a very young New York City based company involved in online advertising. We're in the process of creating an auction based marketplace where publishers and advertisers can buy and sell digital media. The company has been extremely successful and growing by leaps and bounds.

We are looking for bright and ambitious people who will thrive in a high-stress, high-growth startup environment. Particularly, we are looking for people who have a technical background or strong technical skills who don't particularly want to go down the programmer/developer route, but want to be involved in technology in some shape or form. No experience is necessary- just the drive to succeed and the willingness to do what is necessary to get the job done.

Right Media is a true meritocracy and individuals that thrive are quickly rewarded with more responsibility and larger projects. So, rather than go and work at a consulting firm and spend two years of your life slaving away at 'building your resume', why not come join us and learn real skills and get more experience than you'd ever get at a traditional firm that recruits college grads?

  • Gumstix pitcrew member, Portola Valley, CA

    Posted on Mar 1, 2006.
Last updated on Mar 1, 2006.

    Job Description:

After a successful internship last year with a Stanford mechanical engineer, gumstix is again looking to hire. This time, we're looking for two people:

    1. Pit-crew robot person
    2. Pit-crew scripts person

Between them, these individuals will be responsible for maintaining and extending our logistics and fulfillment "machine", which includes our e-commerce server, back-end ERP system, and order-fulfilling shipping robot. Most of the pieces of this system are already in place, but are continuously being improved.

Our business is growing so rapidly that we need help to keep these back-end systems capable of managing our business. The company founders have largely been working on them to date, but we need to spend more time focusing on product development and customers support -- and the machine won't rest!

The first of these two jobs would involve perfecting the design for, and then building, a medium-scale robot to automatically process orders from our website, converting order data and raw inventory into packed envelopes with UPS labels on them ready to go out the door.

The second job would involve PHP/Perl/shell scripting/etc to implement all the bits of software glue needed to keep the machine humming; this would include probably the software to read order data which is then fed to the robot, as well as a variety of enhancements to the existing systems.

We are located in Portola Valley, just across 280 on Alpine Rd. Hours are very flexible, work atmosphere is probably pretty close to unsurpassed. We are looking for at least one of the two crew members to be essentially full-time, the other could be part-time now, hopefully moving to full time later. Compensation will be based on ((skill-set ∪ experience) ∩ needs). If you're interested, please contact Craig at craig@stanfordalumni.org or (650) 851-4450.

    About Gumstix
    -------------

If you haven't heard about us, we make tiny full-blown computer systems (a complete linux server that measures 80mmx20mmx6mm) based on a unique motherboard-daughtercard architecture which allows for an unsurpassed level of design flexibility and ease-of-software-development among embedded systems. We have close to 3,000 customers worldwide, including just about every large technology company you've ever heard of (except, I think, Apple who hasn't officially bought anything from us yet). Our products are being integrated into everything from robotic fish to time and attendance punch-clocks to swarms of autonomous micro-helicopters. http://www.gumstix.com/ for more info.
